Humidifier vs Vaporizer

Humidifier vs Vaporizer. Which one to buy? This is a difficult question to answer because the difference between a humidifier and a vaporizer is actually the wrong question to ask. In simple terms a vaporizer is a type of humidifier. The difference is more about wanting to humidify a room using cold water vapor or hot water vapor.

In this blog I will describe what a humidifier is, what a humidifier does, the different types and recommendations on which to buy. The focus of this review and discussion is more on room humidifiers rather than whole of house humidifiers.

What is a Humidifier?

A humidifier is an appliance which moistens the air with water vapor to increase the humidity, or more specifically, the relative humidity in a room. Humidifiers are normally used in winter when colder weather makes the air, surprisingly, very dry.

If you live in a dry region and are constantly complaining of allergies, chapped lips, dry skin, dry throat, itchy eyes, nosebleeds, coughing and sneezing without any cold symptoms then you probably need a humidifier to make it more comfortable. More moisture in the air will also help relieve symptoms with people experiencing breathing problems and asthma. This is more prevalent during winter months when moisture in the air is reduced. A portable or room humidifier in your living area or bedroom at night will ease some of these symptoms.

Many parents will agree that a humidifier is almost an essential appliance to have with babies and young children, particular during times of cold and flu. The moist air provides relief to children in clearing congestion and soothing dry throat especially at night when the child and parents are attempting to sleep. There is nothing worse than having a child cough and sneeze throughout the night when a relatively inexpensive humidifier could save you of precious sleep time.

What is Relative Humidity?

A humіdіfіеr оr vaporizer’s mаіn аіm іѕ to increase mоіѕturе in the air. Aіr contains a certain amount of water vapor оr moisture. Thе wаrmеr the аіr thе mоrе mоіѕturе іn contains. Fоr example, 10 cubic fооt (0.3 сubіс mеtеrѕ) оf аіr аt 68 F (20 C) will contain 0.18оz (5 grаmѕ) оf wаtеr. At 77F (25 C) thе аіr соntаіnѕ аррrоxіmаtеlу 0.22оz (6.2g) of water.

Rеlаtіvе humidity оn thе other hаnd determines hоw соmfоrtаblе we feel. Relative humіdіtу is expressed аѕ a реrсеntаgе. In thе еxаmрlе аbоvе if thе temperature іѕ 77F and there is 0.18оz оf water vapor іn thе air then thе Rеlаtіvе humidity wіll 100%. If thе air hаѕ 0.09оz at 77F thеn Rеlаtіvе Humіdіtу wіll be 50%. 100% Rеlаtіvе Humidity means that wаtеr on a surface wіll not evaporate іntо thе аіr. In this ѕіtuаtіоn, оur bоdіеѕ wіll feel wаrmеr thаn the асtuаl surrounding аіr as our ѕwеаt wіll nоt еvароrаtе. Wе feel vеrу uncomfortable.

Lоw humіdіtу on thе other hаnd іmрlіеѕ thаt the ѕurrоundіng аіr соntаіnѕ lеѕѕ mоіѕturе whісh rеѕultѕ in fееlіng dеhуdrаtеd аnd раrсhеd. Thіѕ еffесt іѕ fеlt more whеn you have a соld or flu аѕ muсоuѕ membranes drу оut аnd you also dеvеlор a drу ѕоrе throat.

Hence, using a humіdіfіеr оr vароrіzеr durіng соldеr mоnthѕ wіll maintain a comfortable lеvеl оf humіdіtу wіthіn a rооm. A rеlаtіvе humіdіtу оf 50% is gеnеrаllу соnѕіdеrеd a comfortable level.

Rеlаtіvе Humіdіtу іѕ mеаѕurеd uѕіng a Hygrometer (lіtеrаllу a “wаtеr meter”). Sоmе humіdіfіеrѕ аnd vароrіzеrѕ соmе with a buіlt іn hуgrоmеtеr tо allow the user tо vаrу thе humіdіtу, аnd hеnсе соmfоrt lеvеl іn a rооm.

How does a Humidifier work?

There are several ways in which humidifiers can add water vapor to the air.

Evaporative Humidifier

The Evaporative Humidifier is the most of common form of humidifier. Cold water is contained in a small reservoir or tank which gets past through a filter which absorbs the water. A small fan blows air through the filter which evaporates the water and blows the water vapor into the air. This type of humidifier is self regulating because as the relative humidity increases the less water is evaporated from the filter and into the air.

Impeller Humidifier

The Impeller Humidifier has a disc (commonly referred to as an impeller) immersed in a water tank. The disc is rotated and the water is flung from the disc through a diffuser. The diffuser breaks the water into small droplets which float into the air.

Ultrasonic Humidifier

The Ultrasonic Humidifier uses ultrasonic frequency to vibrate a metal membrane or diaphragm. The metal diaphragm produces water droplets which float into the air. Being ultrasonic these appliances are usual silent.

How do I maintain a Humidifier?

Generally, humidifiers are low maintenance, however it is important that the water is changed preferable after each use as bacteria can accumulate in the reservoir or tank when it sits for a long time. Bacteria will get sprayed along with the water vapor if the tank is not cleaned. Some advanced ultrasonic humidifier units have an ultraviolet light to kill any accumulation of bacteria.

Depending on your water supply some water may contain a lot of minerals which if sprayed into the air can cause harmful effects. Most humidifiers are fitted with filters to absorb these minerals.

All humidifiers will require a change of filters or dispersers at some point in time. These can be purchased from online stores such as Amazon.

Refer to manufacturer’s instructions at all times as this will ensure optimal performance from your humidifier.

What is a Vaporizer?

A vaporizer is a humidifier that produces hot water vapor or steam rather than cold water vapor from a traditional humidifier. In effect, the simplest vaporizer can be made by simply heating a pot of boiling water over a stove When water is boiled it converts to water vapor or steam which floats into the air. Although boiling a pot may be an easy solution, it is not very practical or portable to be used in any room of the house. How many houses have a stove in the lounge room or bedrooms!

How does a Vaporizer work?

As discussed in the boiling pot example, a consumer type vaporizer contains reservoir or tank for water. The tank contains a heating element or coils which heat the water to produce steam. The steam is normally expelled from a small hole at the top of the heating unit. Some units have a small reservoir near the steam hole to mix medicated inhalant to help with reducing coughs and unblocking noses.

Are Vaporizers dangerous?

Any device used incorrectly or not following manufactures instructions is going to be dangerous. A vaporizer can produce high temperatures and it’s not advisable to operate unit near babies, young children or pets. However, under careful supervision a vaporizer can be the best option to relieve cold and flu symptoms particularly at night when it harder to get to sleep, especially when you are coughing and have a blocked nose.

Humidifier vs Vaporizer – Which should I buy?

Once again it depends on the application.

It would be recommended to use a Cold Water Humidifier in cases where you are experiencing issues such as:

  • chapped lips,
  • itchy eyes,
  • dry throat
  • dehydration
  • nose bleeds.

The humidifier will assist in the relief of these issues. Check out recommended Cold Water Humidifier types below such as Evaporative Humidifiers, Ultrasonic Humidifiers and Impeller Humidifiers.

On the other hand, the situation where you would like to relieve the effects of Cold and Flu then it recommended to use a Steam Vaporizer which normally come with a Medication Cup to add a medical inhalant such as Vicks Inhalant. The steam produced will make the appliance hot to touch but under careful supervision a vaporizer with the addition of a medical inhalant to be the best option for this situation. There is nothing better to relieve those Cold and Flu symptoms especially at night particularly for babies and young children. This is a must have appliance in this scenario.

Check out the list below of recommended Humidifiers and Vaporizers. These are portable room type humidifiers which range from $15 – $200. They are Humidifier and Vaporizers from reputable manufactures such as Vicks, Honeywell, Vornado, Sunbeam, Crane and Air-O-Swiss.
